Tethys could re-define education

SoftBank Robotics America (SBRA) has announced the launch of Tethys visual learning software– named after the Titan goddess of streams. Designed by Finger Food Advanced Technology Group this educational integrated development environment (IDE) connects to Pepper the Robot providing real time results as students of all ages learn how to code.

The creation of Tethys comes as part of SBRA’s Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STREAM) Education program. The program opens up a realm of new possibilities for students as they look to their future careers and perspectives through technology.

We have a common goal to not only make STREAM careers more accessible to students but to continue and further our commitment to education and our local communities so that we can foster learning in technology for students and their futures.

Pepper – The ever-willing robot

Bridging the Gap

Tethys bridges the gap between visual programming and full-script development. The software uses high-level boxes and wires that send commands to Pepper to complete programming actions. The program actions are then seen on either the virtual robot directly in the browser, or on a physical robot within the classroom to provide real time responses and to encourage problem solving, logical thinking, and ideation.

Equally exciting news, is that we are also partnering with SBRA to donate 10 Pepper Robots and Tethys software licenses to our local Port Coquitlam School District 43. The impact that we have seen on students and teachers since the implementation of Tethys has been tremendous. Tethys is now active in schools in Boston and San Francisco, in addition to Port Coquitlam, and is providing students the opportunity to learn Python while advancing their programming skills.

We couldn’t be more delighted to create a tool that will help to further learning for thousands of students around the world, and in our backyard. We’re looking forward to continued support for further educational tools that can inspire and empower future generations through the development of technology.
